A soldier with the Nigerian army school of armor in Bauchi state has shot himself to death.
According to military sources, the soldier identified as Bello Useni was at his duty post at the Obienu barracks in Bauchi, when the incident happened.
Useni is reported to have suddenly cocked his rifle and opened fire on himself in the stomach in the incident that happened about 4 pm on Wednesday.
The reasons behind suicide were unclear according to the military source as he was in the midst of his colleagues before the incident.
Bello Useni was among soldiers newly recruited into the Army in 2020 and was posted to the army’s school of armor in Bauchi.
“He was on duty alongside his colleagues. They were all discussing normal soldier things and suddenly, he pulled out his gun and shot himself in the stomach,” the source said.
“In fact, we couldn’t even rush him to the hospital as he died on the spot.”
Bello’s remains have since been deposited at the mortuary in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital (ATBU), Bauchi, while his colleagues with him at the time of the incident have been locked up in the guardroom for investigation.
The incident has also been reported to the army headquarters with a board set up to investigate the issue.
Mohammed Yerima, the army spokesperson, was not immediately available to comment on the incident.
Prior to this incident, there have been other instances where soldiers killed themselves.
In 2017, a soldier committed suicide after killing a captain in Chibok, Borno state.
