America has demanded the”immediate release” of dissident journalist Roman Protasevich, who was arrested when Belarusian authorities diverted a Ryanair plane flying to Minsk.

Ryanair said its plane was flying against Greece to Lithuania on Sunday when it had been advised of”a potential safety threat on board” by air traffic controllers in Belarus and told to divert Minsk to an emergency landing.

Roman Belarusian state media previously reported that the country’s President Alexander Lukashenko ordered the recreation.

“This shocking action perpetrated by the Lukashenka regime jeopardized the lives of over 120 passengers, for example, U.S. taxpayers,” Blinken said in an announcement.

“Initial reports suggesting the participation of the Belarusian security services and also using Belarusian military aircraft to escort the plane are deeply about and require complete investigation.”

The US said it had been coordinating its response with partners including the EU and Lithuanian and Democratic officials.
