The Federal government has disclosed an indefinite suspension of Twitter’s operations in Nigeria.

The suspension comes after a statement was released directly from the office of Lai Mohammed, the minister for Information and Culture.

According to the statement, it reads;

”The Federal Government has suspended, indefinitely, the operations of the microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, in Nigeria.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, declared the suspension in a statement issued on Friday at Abuja, recounting the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.

According to the Minister, the Federal Government has also directed the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to immediately commence the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria.”

It is important to note that the immediate suspension of twitter’s operations in the country has been effected few days after a tweet made by the president via his Twitter handle was deleted.
