For the umpteenth time, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has voiced its worries about the commission’s increasing number of court proceedings brought by political parties in connection with pre-election issues.
One political party issued 70 legal papers on INEC in one day, according to IEC Chairman, the chairman of the commission.
Yakubu said that INEC is the most litigated government organization during a media Q&A session in Lagos. He added that the commission is now facing 700 pre-election concerns.

In contrast, he gave the assurance that the Commission, which was established by law, will continue to abide by court rulings when they are brought to INEC’s attention in connection with the nomination of candidates by political parties.
When asked specifically about the case of Tonye Cole, who was ousted as the APC governorship candidate in Rivers State, he responded that while the candidate may have appealed the decision as is his right, the commission would continuously update its candidates’ list as new court orders are made public.
“What we’ve had as a matter of policy is that once there is a valid judgment that we shouldn’t publish the name of this person or that person as a candidate, we comply and there is always a column where we say court order. Sometimes after a few months, another court will reverse that judgment, so we would put the name of that candidate again and say court order and we have been doing so.

The number of candidates whose names must be omitted due to a court order will be updated by the commission, and we will do so soon.
But they are so numerous. One political party alone issued us with 70 court papers on candidate nomination in one day. Since the party primaries were held, there have likely been far over 700 legal cases. People go to court and join INEC, we hear this all the time.
