Emergency services were called to a home at Oxford Street in Kingscliff, south of Queensland’s Gold Coast, just after 8pm yesterday.
Officers found a 29-year-old man wearing a face covering, laying on the verandah with serious knife wounds to the chest.
Despite the efforts of paramedics, he died at the scene.
A 66-year-old man, the sole occupant of the home, was found in the hallway with a partially severed forearm in a semi-conscious state.
Police will allege the deceased and another unknown man entered the premises “with force” and struck the occupant multiple times with an axe.
Detective Inspector Matt Zimmer police are examining whether a silver Toyota Corolla located nearby is linked to the incident.
“We have been informed that the occupant in self defence and in an attempt to protect himself has armed himself with a knife and struck the deceased to the chest,” he said.
“We will be examining the circumstances surrounding the incident, in particular the conduct of the occupant if the conduct was necessary and proportionate to his safety.”
Zimmerman said the man underwent surgery this morning and is in a stable condition.
It’s understood reports of alleged drug dealing occurring at the Kingscliff property will inform one line of police inquiries.
Police are now searching for a male aged between 20 and 40 years old who is believed to have fled the scene.
