Alleged assault on a security guard by the Chairman of the CCT


The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Bala Ciroma, has ordered an investigation into the alleged assault on a security guard by the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Justice Danladi Umar.

Some operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) on Wednesday obtained a statement from the security guard, Clement Sagwak, according to his lawyer, Samuel Ihensekhien Esq.

Ihensekhien additionally stated some lawyers and civil society organisations have vowed to collectively prosecute a civil suit against Umar.

Umar was seen in a video, which has gone viral on Monday, assaulting the security guard following an argument over the parking area at the Banex Shopping Plaza, Wuse 2, Abuja.

Ihensekhien says some human rights lawyers, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, and an executive member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) have all indicated interest to file petitions on Monday, April 5, and to start a civil suit against Umar over the incident.

Ihensekhien additionally informed that Justice Umar reported the matter at the Maitama Area Command however when the DPO saw the viral video, he sought to see the security guard.

However he stated he advised the guard against honouring the invitation, and since there have been moves to take the matter up with the CP.

“We intend to write all the relevant agencies, the embassies, Lawyer General of the Federation, the human rights commission, and subsequently, we need to make sure there is a watertight defence team for the boy,” he stated.

The CCT had in a statement on Tuesday signed by its Head of Press and Public Relations, Ibraheem Al-Hassan, denied any wrongdoing on the plaza.

Al-Hassan stated the security guard rudely prevented the jurist from parking at a vacant area opposite a shop he wanted to make a buy from, and in the altercation that followed, some persons he described as “miscreants” and “Biafran boys” prevented him from driving out of the premises and damaged his car.
