ASUU: What Students Should Expect As Universities Reopen After 8-Month Strike

On Monday, February 14, 2022, the ASUU strike caused all institutions in Nigeria to close, including universities, and several students at universities in Nigeria assumed that the strike would only last for a short time.

While they were on their way back home, they only brought a few belongings and pieces of clothing with them. They had no idea that they were about to start on a trip that would last for several weeks.

Some students remained on campus in the hope that the strike would be called off in the near future; I am aware of some students who chose only approximately three items of clothing from the available options.

However, much to their utter bewilderment, even eight full months after the cessation of operations, it is still unknown whether or not operations would be resumed.

On October 14, 2022, as a result of the involvement of the leadership of the Speaker, House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamala, and President Muhammadu Buhari, the industrial action that was being carried out by ASUU was halted.

As a result of the strike, some people have taken advantage of the situation to work or learn new skills both inside and outside. Some people have begun to eat continuously throughout the day in response to the common phrase heard on the street: “We cannot come and kill ourselves!”

A few weeks into the strike, an undergraduate student at Alex Ekwueme Federal University who was majoring in biochemistry named Udochukwu Collins claimed that he immediately started working and that this gave him the opportunity to comprehend life outside of the classroom.

“Okay, talking about leveraging the ASUU strike on my own side, I will answer yes since I worked during the period and I get to grasp what life would be like after graduation,” said the student.
