Benue State Government has made an appeal to the high delegation of the United Nations to convey the Federal Government’s neglect to pay attention to the humanitarian crisis in Benue and the dreadful condition of the over two million Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, in the state. Benue is one of the most populous states in Nigeria, with over two million IDPs.
Dr. Emmanuel Shior, Executive Secretary of the Benue State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, made the appeal yesterday, September 6th, 2023, when he received in his office the United Nations high delegation who were in the state to assess the humanitarian challenges in the state. He expressed his regret that the Federal Government had abandoned the state together with the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), “who were displaced by armed Fulani herders, in flagrant violation of world treaties on the right to life and human dignity.”
He pointed out that the few resources of the State Government had been overstretched due to the humanitarian situation in the state, which had been caused by armed herdsmen assaults over the course of the previous five years, as well as the entry of over ten thousand Cameroonian Refugees.

He pointed out that the limited resources of the State Government had been overstretched due to the humanitarian crisis that had occurred in the state as a result of armed herdsmen assaults over the course of the previous five years and the entry of more than ten thousand Cameroonian Refugees.
Dr. Shior recounted that “thousands of lives have been lost, homes, schools, markets, churches, and health centers have been destroyed,” and that “over two million internally displaced persons are currently residing in seven official and eleven unofficial camps and host communities across the state.”
In spite of this, he praised the efforts of humanitarian partners and organizations such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Doctors Without Borders (MSF), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), the media, and other international and local nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) for their assistance in providing relief to Benue’s internally displaced persons (IDPs
According to him, the situation, which has been going on for a number of years, has only received skeletal assistance from the Federal Government. He said this is because the Federal Government continues to house more than two hundred humanitarian agencies in the Northeast, while only ten are permitted to be involved in the humanitarian challenge in Benue State.
The Executive Secretary pleaded with them to aid in relaying the humanitarian situation in Benue to the Federal Government, which has been silent over the matter. She also expressed optimism that their arrival would assist in presenting the realities on the ground to the rest of the world.

He reaffirmed that the administration of the state, which is led by Governor Samuel Ortom, is dedicated to maintaining its efforts to further bolster, support, and enforce all steps to mitigate the situation.
