At the Cele bus-stop end of the Oshodi/Apapa expressway in Lagos, yesterday, a truck carrying two 20-foot containers collapsed on three vehicles, killing the driver and injuring several others.
Before help could arrive, the deceased, who was operating a commercial bus with the late number AKD 489 XZ, passed away.
A Mack truck, a Volkswagen bus with the license plate AKD 489XZ, a Highlander Jeep with the plate AGL 366FP, and a Toyota RAV4 with the plate AAA 353FH were all involved in the multi-vehicle accident.
Despite conflicting reports of how the incident occurred, eyewitnesses claimed that the commercial bus’s driver was traveling against the flow of traffic when he struck the truck that was traveling in the opposite direction.
However, according to a different account, the truck, which was approaching Mile Two, experienced brake failure and attempted to use the median as a wedge, ramming into the commercial bus and trapping the driver there.
The two other vehicles’ passengers narrowly avoided death because they only suffered injuries.
Swinging into action instantly, sympathisers seized over the expressway, blocking motorists from advancing nearer the area.
The containers had to be removed from the commercial bus, in which the driver was still imprisoned, by construction workers who were working on the Apapa/Oshodi expressway.
However, as the crane raised one of the containers, it landed on the commercial bus and crushed it, leaving the driver—who had been waving his hand for assistance—immobilized.
Adebayo Taofiq, the director of the public affairs and education department at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), confirmed the incident and stated that the dead commercial bus driver’s corpse was immediately given to his wife and other family members who had arrived at the accident scene.

He also said that additional passengers who had been saved by LASTMA authorities had been given to emergency responders’ medical staff.
