Court imposes N40m fine on ex-presidential candidate for attempting to prevent Tinubu’s inauguration

Ambrose Owuru, a former presidential candidate, was fined N40 million by the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja for filing a frivolous suit seeking to stop the inauguration of Bola Tinubu, who will become president on May 29. The suit sought to stop the president-elect from taking his oath of office.

The court ordered Owuru to pay a total of N10 million to each of the following parties: President Muhammadu Buhari, Attorney General Abubakar Malami, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and Tinubu.

Justice Jamil Tukur, who was responsible for reading the lead judgement of the three-man panel of the court, came to the conclusion that Owuru engaged in a serious misuse of the judicial system when he filed a groundless lawsuit in an effort to anger the respondents.

Owuru’s complaints about the results of the presidential election in 2019 were found to be not only peculiar but also unwarranted by the Court of Appeal. This was due to the fact that Owuru’s complaints had been taken all the way to the Supreme Court, where they were ultimately rejected due to a lack of legal basis.

Justice Tukur stated that Owuru’s action to resuscitate the case that had been dormant at the Supreme Court since 2019 was intended to bring the lower courts into direct conflict with the supremacy of the Apex Court.
