Davido talks to CNN about his N200 million gift

David Adeleke, commonly known as Davido, a multi-award-winning Nigerian artist, has explained how he came up with the money he received days before his birthday.

During an interview with CNN’s Zain Asher, the Champion Sound singer revealed that the money earned from a tweet began as a prank.

The host had opened the dialogue by asking the audience to contribute money to the musician on his birthday.

Davido instantly addressed the issue of how he was able to raise such a large sum of money.

““Naaaaa, I didn’t ask my friends to donate, it was like a joke.I told him that if he ever made him get into music, he should send him a million naira ($2,200).

“So my pals began sending me money, and after a while, I began to notice an unusually large amount of money in my account.” I began to see regular people, and fans began mailing me money.”

On his social media platforms, the artist joked that everybody who had listened to his successful songs should send him money, following which he put his bank account information online.

Initially, he stated that the funds will be used to clear his Rolls Royce at the port, with a goal of N100 million.

“If you know I gave you a smash song.. pay me money…. una know una self oo,” the DMW chief wrote on Twitter.

All of the N200 million Davido received from fans and friends was later donated to charity.

He contributed N50 million to the overall charitable donation, bringing the total to N250 million.

He stated that all of the funds would be sent to orphans across Nigeria.
