Amara Iwuanyanwu, the deputy speaker of the Imo state House of Assembly, has been impeached.

On November 2, Iwuanyanwu was impeached in plenary at the Assembly compound.

Ekene Nnodim, who represents the Orlu State Constituency, sponsored a resolution to remove Iwuanyanwu as Deputy Speaker, which was endorsed by 18 of the 27 MPs.

Speaker Paul Emezim, who presided over the plenary, authorized Iwuanyanwu’s impeachment without reading the resolution’s wording.

The Assembly also recalled six suspended legislators.

The Speaker of the House has controversially suspended the lawmakers for “unparliamentary behavior.”

The Speaker’s suspension, which took place on July 8, created chaos in the plenary, with random gunfire filling the air until his security aides snuck him out.
