In its multibillion-naira Hospital Support Programme (NLNG HSP), Nigeria LNG (NLNG) Limited has started a second round of commissioning Phase 1 projects in the states of Lagos, Kano, Bayelsa, and Cross River.
The commissioning of an obstetrics and gynecology ward at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Lagos, marked the beginning of the round. Following this, the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital (NDUTH), Yenagoa, Occupational Therapy and Neuromodulation Rehabilitation Centre, Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), Kano, and the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Calabar, will all commission their respective intensive care units (ICUs).
With the opening of a maternity center at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH), Gwagwalada, and a new intensive care unit (ICU) at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, the commissioning of projects got underway in 2022. (UBTH).
In the initial stage, these teaching hospitals were chosen. The program focuses on a total of 12 hospitals from the six geographical regions of the nation. The 12 Federal University Teaching Hospitals that span the nation’s six geopolitical zones are part of the NLNG Hospital Support Programme (HSP), the company’s national Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. In 2022, the program was launched.
Dr. Philip Mshelbila, managing director and chief executive officer of NLNG, stated at the LUTH commissioning on Monday that the project’s aim was to support the provision of high-quality healthcare for Nigerians through the development of the nation’s tertiary healthcare delivery system, with corresponding effects on medical research and the retention of local medical expertise. He was represented at the event by Mr. Andy Odeh, general manager of external relations and sustainable development.
On the way to making it a destination for the delivery of top-notch healthcare, he claimed that the company had assisted in reshaping the nation’s healthcare system for a better and more responsive system. He urged the administration of LUTH to see to it that the resources were used effectively for training and treating patients.
The Honourable Ekumankama Joseph Nkama, Minister of State for Health, spoke on behalf of the Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, who said that NLNG has proven to be a dependable partner in the long-term growth of the nation’s healthcare system.
“This project has complemented federal government efforts to raise the standard of healthcare in LUTH. The project involves updating and furnishing the 120-bed Obstetrics and Gynecology Ward in the hospital’s Block C section. It’s crucial to remember that Block C was constructed about 60 years ago and hasn’t undergone any significant renovations since. The NLNG is appreciated for this wonderful deed by the Federal Government and the Ministry of Health. We are also aware of the Company’s other initiatives to support infrastructure renewal across all industries, but especially in the health sector, he added.

The recently approved LUTH project included the addition of 120 beds to serve prenatal and postnatal services, as well as the complete renovation and upgrading of the Obstetrics and Gynecology (Ward C) Block, a four-story building. A waiting area, nurse stations, private wards, consulting rooms, a radiation room, as well as call rooms for doctors and nurses, are some of the additional amenities.
A one-story new intensive care unit (ICU) building with a six-bed ICU and a four-bed renal dialysis unit at NDUTH in Yenagoa will be put into service by NLNG. This building will be connected to the existing operating room. A two-winged Occupational Therapy and Neuromodulation Rehabilitation Center bungalow with amenities like a female ward, children’s ward, nurses’ station, and ward round room was built at the AKTH in Kano. The therapy wing includes a physiotherapy hall, EEG room, RTMS room, ECT room, patient waiting room, recovery room, and other amenities.
The 18-bed Neurosurgical and Stroke Centre project at UCTH, Calabar includes male and female wards with nine beds each, an operating room, three consulting offices, a pharmacy, two sleep-in rooms, nursing and recovery rooms, and other related facilities.
The commissioning ceremonies complete the Phase 1 projects’ implementation.
With the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), Port Harcourt, the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), Uyo, the renovation and equipping of an accident and emergency unit and theater, and the University of Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), Jos, the construction and equipping of a twin theater suite, NLNG began Phase 2 in February 2023.
Nigerian National Petroleum Company (49%) is the majority shareholder in NLNG, followed by Shell Gas B.V. (25.6%), TotalEnergies Gaz & Electricity Holdings (15%), and Eni International N.A. N. V. S.àr.l (10.4%).
