Opposition Parties Warn Against Plans To Remove INEC Chairman

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) issued a stern warning in response to reports that a number of senators loyal to All Progressives Congress (APC) governors are allegedly plotting to ensure the removal of the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, in advance of the general elections in 2023.

Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, the spokesman for CUPP, released a statement in which he remembered that the opposition coalition discovered this conspiracy via the use of trustworthy information one month ago.

He stated that the allegation that politicians were moving against Yakubu over INEC’s insistence on adopting the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) in the general elections scheduled for the next year has corroborated their intelligence discovery. The news was published in the Saturday Sun.

Ugochinyere stated that the plot to use the Senate to shake Yakubu so that he may discard the use of BVAS will lead to an election crisis and will be contested strongly by opposition parties and CSOs. Ugochinyere further stated that the crisis will be caused by the Senate.

“INEC Chairman had reiterated at various fora that the Commission will ensure a free and fair election, and the only way to do that is through the use of BVAS and E-transmission of Election Results,” said the INEC chairman. “The only way to do that is through the use of BVAS and E-transmission of Election Results.”

CUPP held a joint press conference in Abuja last month to make Nigerians aware of the recently intercepted intelligence of a fresh plot against the 2023 election.

This time, the plot is being coordinated by leading figures of the ruling APC Party, APC Governors led by a South East APC Governor with a controversial past, and another from the North West who are working with their colleagues to perfect a plot to intimidate INEC leadership. CUPP made this information known to Nigerians at the press conference

“Although it’s not surprising, it’s extremely sad that the parliament, which is the final hope of the ordinary man, is actually considering going forward with this horrible scheme, only because the APC is terrified of losing the election in 2023,” the speaker said. ”

It’s not shocking, but it is truly sad.” As a result, we are issuing a call to action to the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, to issue orders to the nation’s governors and parliamentarians to ensure that they do not undermine the nation’s democracy while he is in office.

“Playing with fire and presenting a direct insult and challenge to Nigerian voters would be the result of any more steps taken in this regard. We have already delivered petitions to the United States and United Kingdom embassies as well as other foreign embassies and informed them about the purported new scheme.

We state again! Any effort to get rid of Professor Mahmud Yakubu and other high-ranking officials at INEC would not be approved.
