The Labour Party’s (LP) new campaign director-general, Akin Osuntokun, has come under fire from the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore because the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) says he cannot withdraw his senatorial bid.
After Doyin Okupe, the previous DG, resigned, Osuntokun was chosen to lead the presidential campaign for Peter Obi and Datti Baba Ahmed.
In an interview on Wednesday, Osuntokun said that he gave up his ZLP-sponsored bid for the Senate in order to become Peter Obi’s campaign director.
The electoral commission, however, stated on Thursday that neither the new DG nor his party may withdraw their support.
Festus Okoye, INEC’s Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, informed Premium Times over the phone that Osuntokun is still the ZLP’s candidate for the Ekiti Central Senatorial seat.

Okoye emphasized that no candidate running in the general elections of 2023 may be withdrawn, submitted, or replaced by the new DG or any political party for that matter.
Sowore responds.
Sowore characterized Osuntokun as a hustler and opportunist who switches between political parties in a tweet that was posted on Twitter.
Sowore also questioned how a person could simultaneously be a member of two political parties.
