Standing ovation for seven minutes for Depp’s comeback film Jeanne du Barry
Johnny Depp’s new film Jeanne du Barry received a seven-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival in France.
Mawenn’s film is a biopic about the life and death of Jeanne Becu, Comtesse du Barry, one of King Louis XV’s most famous and last mistresses who was executed by guillotine during the French Revolution for treason. Jeanne du Barry stars Mawenn and Depp as du Barry and Louis XV, respectively. It is Depp’s first film since his highly publicised defamation trial against his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard.
Participants at the film’s Cannes premiere erupted in applause for Depp’s seven-minute performance as King Louis XV. The actor, who was taken aback by the response, waved to the audience from the balcony, while Mawenn sobbed as she dedicated the film to her significant other.

“I’d like to share this moment with my lover, the producer, and Le Pacte.” It was a difficult production to finance… “I want to share this moment with my entire team across the theatre,” she explained.
It remains to be seen whether Depp’s success in the French film festival and film industry will translate to Hollywood, where he remains an outcast due to the abuse allegations that surfaced prior to and during the trial.
Regardless, Depp is set to reunite with Al Pacino to direct a biopic film about Amedeo Modigliani, an Italian sculptor and nude painter.
