Three people detained in Ogun for attempting to assassinate police traffic officer, driver
Three individuals were detained on Saturday by members of the Ogun State police command for allegedly trying to assassinate police sergeant Sunday Akinpelu.
Akinpelu was assaulted while performing his duty in the Obafemi Owode Local Government area of Ogun State’s Orile Imo neighborhood.
The suspects, Olayiwola Basiru, Bamimore Isiaka, and Soliu, allegedly assaulted Sgt. Akinpelu attempted to set a police tow vehicle on fire in order to obstruct the investigation into the accident’s cause.
The Sergeant, who was assigned to the traffic section of the Owode Egba division, was tasked with rescuing the casualties and returning the damaged vehicles to the station when there was the word of an accident at Orile Imo.
“But on getting to the scene, the arrested suspects had descended on the police officer and the tow truck driver with a sledge hammer, sticks and other dangerous weapons,” Abimbola Oyeyemi, Ogun State police spokesman, said on Monday.
According to Oyeyemi, this was done to stop them from transporting one of the automobiles involved in the collision to the station.
Oyeyemi claimed that the police officer and the driver of the tow truck had made it to the station “with varying degrees of injuries.”

Following a briefing on the attack, CSP Olasunkanmi Popoola, the divisional police officer for Owode Egba, had dispatched his men to the scene, “where he met the suspects who had already poured gasoline on the towing vehicle and were about setting it on fire, after removing a cash sum of N520,000, belonging to the tow vehicle’s driver.”
While the DPO managed to retrieve the last of the petrol from the hoodlums, it was reported that others managed to flee while three of the hoodlums were caught.
Meanwhile, it was reported that Lanre Bankole, the commissioner of police, had given the order for the evading suspects to be found and arrested.
He also gave the order to transfer the detained suspects to the State CIID for additional inquiry and potential prosecution.
