UK Fines Chris Oyakhilome’s Loveworld Channel N65 million For Spreading Covid-19 Conspiracy Theories

Ofcom, the United Kingdom’s communications regulator has imposed a fine on Pastor Chris Oyakhilome’s Loveworld Limited for airing potentially harmful claims about coronavirus.

According to a statement released on Wednesday, the company is set to pay the fine of £125,000 (N65 million) after its television channel, Loveworld Television Network, broadcast a programme that featured not just inaccurate but potentially harmful claims about the virus.

The company’s clergyman had claimed that the pandemic and new vaccines were all a ruse by the government to insert nanochips to control and harm people. Ofcom added that allowing further broadcast could weaken people’s belief in the public health sector.

While this will not be the first time Oyakhilome’s channel is coming under heavy scrutiny by Ofcom, it is its first monetary fine since the coronavirus outbreak in 2020.

Reacting to the new fine, the company appealed to the regulators offering ways to curb the spread of such harmful sermons on their live transmissions including a 20-second delay to screen out any potentially harmful claims in relation to COVID-19.
