Effective communication depends in large part on what kind of communicator you are. People would always like to listen to you if you are an effective communicator.

There are basically only two types of speakers: appealing speakers and not-appealing speakers. The table below will clarify the traits and qualities of appealing speakers.

Warm, friendly, open, honest speakers A comedian is a great example because they usually put us at ease. The speaker invites us to relax and relate more directly and openly us.

Most of us are guarded communicators while these speakers have the great ability to communicate in an unguarded way. It proves how comfortable and secure someone must be to behave this way.

Exciting, creative, interesting speakers It is truly a pleasure to communicate with these speakers. They have the rare talent of arousing feelings of anticipation and curiosity in others. Their listeners cannot wait for the next thing they want to say.

Knowledgeable, confident speakers

These speakers give reassurance. They are obviously well-educated on the subject. We listen and trust our internal instinct that listening will be beneficial.

Organized speakers

Our brains need order and logic and these speakers fulfill these needs. The information they provide is delivered in an easily absorbed and recognizable format. We need to see, hear, and picture the structure in the order that underlies the message, especially in today’s technological world.

Authentic speakers

These speakers are honest about what they want to say. They do not hide the truth. A truthful person speaking from the heart is without deception or hidden agendas.

These speakers allow us to follow them. Their enthusiasm and originality carry us.

Informal speakers

These speakers move right into the comfort zone of casual conversation: no orating, lecturing, or heavy-handed instruction. The message becomes digestible, in bite-sized pieces. Very relaxed.

Although being funny is a trait desired by many, not all of us are naturally funny. Genuinely funny speakers are naturally funny and can consistently monitor the appropriateness of their jokes.

The question is what kind of speaker are you? What kind of speaker do you want to become? We are all trying to communicate to make ourselves progress in life. But we will usually hide many weaknesses of ourselves from others.

This is a normal reflex of people in general. It is not advisable to walk around and communicate with others in a too candid manner. Others might feel offended by your honesty. The right balance of openness and introversion is required in everyday communication settings.
