29-year-old man sentenced to death by hanging for stabbing stepmother to death

A Kano State High Court on Thursday sentenced Sagiru Abdullahi, 29, to death by hanging for fatally stabbing his 55-year-old stepmother Zainab Dan’Azumi.

The man received a death by hanging verdict after being found guilty of one count of culpable homicide.

The judge who oversaw the case, Aisha Mahmoud, determined that the prosecution had established its case beyond a reasonable doubt and condemned the defendant to death by hanging.

The prosecution’s attorney, Mr. Tijjani Ibrahim, had earlier informed the court that Abdullahi had committed the crime in June 2014 at Kurmawa Quarters in Kano.

He claimed that the inmate repeatedly cut the stepmother, Zainab Dan’Azumi, 55, on the head with a machete before she passed away.
The woman was taken urgently to Kano’s Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, where a doctor pronounced her dead.
