A woman has been charged with animal torture after a dog was allegedly thrown off a cliff south of Sydney last year.
A bushwalker said he heard the sound of a dog yelping as he was walking through Clive Bissell Drive at Mount Ousley, four kilometres northwest of Wollongong, at 8.30am on January 22, 2023.
He found a kennel, which was tipped upside down, at the base of an escarpment with an injured Australian Bulldog inside.
The dog appeared emaciated and in poor health, NSW Police said.
Police allege the kennel had been thrown over the edge of a cliff the night before.
SES, Wollongong Police and the Police Rescue Unit managed to retrieve the dog, however, it had to be euthanised because of its injuries and poor condition.
Following an extensive investigation, including forensic analysis of the kennel, police arrested a woman in Horsley at 11am on Friday.
She has been charged with torture, beat etc. causing the death of an animal.
She was granted bail and will appear in Wollongong Local Court on May 14.
